Liver Function Test: Why Are They Important?

Liver function test is to check various indexes related to liver functional metabolism through various biochemical test methods to reflect the basic status of liver function. Due to the diverse liver functions, there are many liver function tests.

Liver function examination is an auxiliary method for diagnosing diseases of the hepatobiliary system. If a correct diagnosis of the disease is to be made, a comprehensive analysis must also be carried out in conjunction with the patient's medical history, physical examination, and imaging studies.

A blood test to check liver function can tell if the liver is working properly. There are many blood test items to check liver function, but the most widely used basic test is LFT.

liver function test is a test that can be performed to detect and evaluate liver damage or abnormality by measuring enzymes or proteins produced or excreted in the liver or affected by liver damage.

In addition, it should be pointed out that there are many items of liver function tests, but not every test item needs to be done. Usually doctors will choose a group or several of them based on the patient's medical history and symptoms.

Contra indications:

  1. Do not eat or drink water before the liver function test. You must maintain an empty stomach. The fasting time is generally 8 to 12 hours.
  2. Do not drink alcohol, eat spicy foods, or greasy foods the night before liver function tests. You must do light food.
  3. Do not stay up late the night before liver function tests and do not take medicine, otherwise it may lead to elevated transaminases and abnormal liver function tests.

The liver is responsible for the digestion of food, the accumulation of energy and the removal of toxic substances from the body. If any abnormalities are found in liver function, a liver function test or LFT should be performed to determine the exact cause of the problem.

A liver function test helps the doctor analyze the amount of proteins, enzymes, and some other substances, such as:

  • Total protein
  • The amount of bilirubin (bilirubin is part of the bile juices secreted by the liver during the destruction of red blood cells)
  • Prothrombin time (time required for blood coagulation)
  • Liver enzymes such as ALT (alanine transaminase), AST (aspartate transaminase), ALP (alkaline phosphatase), and GGT (gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase).
  • Albumin (another form of protein).

Liver function tests are blood tests that are a non-invasive way to check for liver disease (for example, hepatitis in a blood donation) and to measure the severity and progression of a disease of the liver and its response to treatment.

Liver tests are done on blood samples and measure the levels of enzymes and other substances synthesized by the liver.

The level of some of these substances makes it possible to assess whether the liver is performing its normal functions of producing protein and secreting bile. The level of other substances can detect the presence and degree of inflammation of the liver.
